    VTM NIEUWS – Rebranding

    Introducing a dynamic and multi-functional shape to VTM’s brand identity created a dialogue between the Belgian commercial broadcaster and their audience that furthered their position as the ultimate entertainment guide – always at the side of the spectator. Their premium news brand and Belgium’s leading visual news medium, VTM nieuws, sought a similarly fresh and engaging approach; they turned to Gédéon to re-configure the newscast as a prominent, reliable fixture in the lives of Flemish people and elevate to the top level.

    To make VTM nieuws a truly 24hr news brand, with round-the-clock relevance to its Flemish audience, and not merely a one-hour tv programme, a brand grammar with a dynamic and straightforward identity was required, as well as a graphic design that would operate across all platforms, securing the on-going relevance and success of VTM.

    VTM nieuws tasked Gédéon with the redesign of the newscast as a relevant, 360° news brand. Starting from a new set design therefore, we enlisted the expertise of Simon Jago Design (Sky News, BBC) with whom we worked hand in hand in order to realize this new, global vision for the newscast.

    The color palette expresses the tenets of VTM’s DNA; style, directness and expertise. A blue studio background provides a simple and reliable atmosphere, black/white typography stays true to VTM’s commitment to providing accurate and critical information and red accents add vibrancy, highlighting breaking topics and announcements.

A blue studio background provides a simple and reliable atmosphere, black/white typography stays true to VTM’s commitment to providing accurate and critical information and red accents add vibrancy, highlighting breaking topics and announcements.

    To communicate the idea of VTM nieuws as a reliable and straightforward 24-hour newscast brand, the « continuum » shape was developed to act as a guide for the viewer experience. Applicable to openers, supporting and highlighting images, titles or announcements, transition swipes between subjects and providing breathing space during Switches, « the continuum » is versatile and dynamic.

    The red bullet-point conveys clear, to-the-point information whilst the extended line suggests detailed story-telling and expertise. In still images, the bullet-point has a red glow 3x the size of the centre-point. In animation, this glow pulses, disappearing and reappearing, reaffirming the notion of VTM nieuws as the beating heart of the Flemish newscast industry, always prepared to provide front-line, ground-breaking and relevant news.
